Simple Church Conference 16 Wrap Up

I want to take a second and thank everyone who came together this last weekend for the simple church conference.  As I shared at the conference, I had experienced a lot of resistance about the entire during the whole process of planning our time together–so much so that I knew the day had to happen!  I trust that the our time will together will continue to impact our faith journeys and our simple churches that we are connected too. For those that could not make it, allow me to offer a brief summary of our weekend: On Saturday morning, we saw… Read More »Simple Church Conference 16 Wrap Up

Podcast: What Is A Simple Church?

In episode 2 of the all new Keep it Simple Podcast, we address the question “What is a simple church?” In order to answer this question, we begin by taking a look at what is absolutely necessary for a local church to exist.  Our search leads us to answer other questions like, “What are non-negotiable and what is optional when it come to ‘church?’” “What things are hindering the church from being all that God wants it to be?” In this podcast we will also look at two aspects of modern church that usually are considered essential– Professionals and Programs.  We re-examine their… Read More »Podcast: What Is A Simple Church?

A Savior

A Savior By Emma Duerson A blinding star beaming with light Was seen across the land Holier than the star was bright Was the Savior born that night The little King was not to lay in a castle crib But upon the hay The darkness beheld the birth of Jesus Christ our King —- Emma is our ten year old daughter (pictured in the bottom right corner).  She has developed a great interest in poetry this year.  It is a privilege and joy for our family to be on this journey with you!  Merry Christmas!

Not Officially Hosting House Church Anymore

I recently received and email from a woman that I had contact with several years ago when I was seeking to connect with others in Kentucky exploring simple/house/organic church.  She was trying to host a house church in her rural Kentucky home.  I thought this “update” was very interesting… not the least for the fact that she was no longer “officially hosting a house church anymore.” You know, I am not officially hosting a house church anymore. I really enjoyed that season of my life, but several of our families moved away and it just seemed like the season was… Read More »Not Officially Hosting House Church Anymore

Trying To Figure Out “Church?” Try this…

Neil Cole over at his Coleslaw blog recently wrote a post entitled “Jesus’ View of The Church.”  I thought that Neil had a great idea for anyone or any group trying to figure out what church should look like.  Spoiler Alert… this was the very last part of the post. Here’s a closing suggestion: Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle creating two columns. On the left write: “Who is Jesus?” and write down all the things you know about him (descriptions, names, powers). On the right side write: “Difference this should make in the… Read More »Trying To Figure Out “Church?” Try this…

Jonathan Wilson, FCA, and Skate Church

I am pleased to introduce a good friend.  Jonathan Wilson, a local Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative, also serves as a leader in simple church. This short video, put together by Providence Church in Raleigh, NC (a church that supports Jonathan’s work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes), highlights his work in the skate community here in Lexington. He also briefly discusses what simple church at the skate park looks like. You can find out more about the skate camp mentioned in this video here.  The simple church that gathers at the skate park (also known as “skate church”) has… Read More »Jonathan Wilson, FCA, and Skate Church
