#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday #GivingTuesday is an opportunistic social media campaign invented by nonprofits to capitalize on the guilt of Americans who have just spent gazillions of dollars and countless hours purchasing and parusing unneeded stuff for themselves and their family with whom they rarely get to see except on Christmas and Thanksgiving (but now only Christmas, because they spent Thanksgiving at Wal-Mart and on their phones looking for #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday deals.) As such, I did not want to miss out on the opportunity provided by #GivingTuesday to capitalize on the guilt that you may be experiencing from the previous weekend and let you know how you can support...

Christmas Celebration with Lylak December 16

Each year, we host a Christmas celebration gathering for simple church friends and family in the region.    This Christmas, we are partnering with local musicians from the band Lylak and simple church friends Roser (Matthew and Alysa Cobb) to host a night of Christmas carols and songs. Perhaps slightly different from years past, we expect that there will be many folks unfamiliar with the idea of simple church desiring to come via their connection with Lylak.  So, this will be an opportunity for the various simple churches to connect, but also a chance for us to bless the city a message of hope through carols and song.  In addition, we will have opportunities...

Transitions (Audio Teaching)

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Wayne Jacobsen here in Lexington.  He probably doesn’t remember much about the meeting, but I remember being slightly discouraged.  At the time, I was just getting started with this ministry of helping folks start simple churches and I didn’t get the sense from him that he was all that excited about simple churches!  I had read his book So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore?” (download free here) and really resonated with the main character’s frustrations.  While I agreed that “house church was not the answer” (a realization the character discovers), I’m not...

A Powerful Video On Hospitality

Take a few minutes and listen to the story of how hospitality changed the life of author Rosaria Butterfield!  I happen to stumble upon this video and realized, just before posting it here, that my wife Karla is presently reading a book by Rosaria for her Classical Conversations book club.  Classical Conversations is a homeschool cooperative that we have been a part of for some time and that Rosaria apparently is also a part of.  (Perhaps you are familiar with my rap song about Classical Conversations entitled “Kickin’ It Homeschool?” :). How does this video speak to you?  What relevance does it have for those involved in simple church? ...

Church Ain’t About The Building – Joseph Solomon Video

Joseph Solomon has gained a following online for his music, poetry, and YouTube videos about Christianity.  If you are like me, the idea of broadcasting your life and on social media is still a bit of an odd concept. However, no one can argue that this practice is becoming increasingly normal for an entire generation of younger folks.  So, it should be no surprise that the Lord would meet people where there are (online) to spread His love.  In the Vlog (Video Blog) below, Joseph provides a small window into what house church and disciple-making (what he calls “building”) looks like for him in the middle of Chicago. It’s worth a...

Skate Church Trip To Barcelona

Right now, a small group of guys from Lexington’s Skate Church and Nicholasville’s Skate Church are in Barcelona Spain, the unofficial skateboarding capital of the world! Read below from Josh Roberts about the trip’s goals and purpose: A note from Josh Roberts Hey church family! I’m excited to tell share with you that Jonathan Wilson, Bryce Benifield, Chris Smith, and I will be heading to Barcelona, Spain on 10/20/18. We will be returning 10/27/18. The purpose of the trip started simply as a skateboarding mission to film a video, and potentially do some outreach at a popular public skate spot. However, as we get closer I have felt the Lord calling us...

How Do You Know God Loves You? (Conference Recap)

How Do You Know God Loves You? (Conference Recap)

How Do You Know God Loves You? A summary of the Simple Church Conference 2018 (pictured to the left is the home in Stanford, KY where we gathered for the our meetings together) “God loves You!” is foundational truth of the Christian faith. It is repeated so frequently among the faithful that it’s almost ingrained in our minds. “Jesus love me this I know, for the Bible tells me so,” is perhaps the first song that many Christians sing to their children. However, how do we really know that God loves us? If someone came to you and said, “Forget the Bible verses.  Tell me why you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God loves you.” How would you answer? This...

Why I No Longer Go To Church – An Open Letter (by Jeff Herron)

Below is an “open letter” that Jeff Herron posted to facebook and I’m reposting here with his permission.  I thought Jeff articulated well what I find many simple/house church folks are trying to express–especially to loved ones and other brothers and sisters who may not understand why they are doing what they are doing.  Jeff has posted on this site before and he and his family continue to be an encouragement to me and to many involved in simple churches across the region.   ————— An Open Letter By Jeff Herron To:  My friends and family who regularly attend traditional church services Re: Why I no longer...

New Simple Church In…Vermont!

Several months ago I received a very encouraging message from a Justin in Vermont.  Justin left a message that he had been through a type of crises related to his understanding of “church” and stumbled upon our website.  There he found our podcast and listened to several of them and had decided to start a simple church himself.  Over the past several months, I have been encouraged to meet with Justin, his friend Matthew, and members of their community via online meetings using Zoom (something I’m available to do with you as well!).  Their simple church has been blessed to see God move as several folks have committed their lives to Christ in the...
