16 Characteristics of Spectators (and Disciple-Makers)

16 Characteristics of Spectators (and Disciple-Makers)

I recently came across this list of attitudes or characteristics of “Spectators” and “Disciple-makers.” I found these lists while reviewing old notes I jotted down during the first days of this website and ministry.   I believe they are from the book (or inspired by the book) “No More Spectators” by Mark Nyswander. It’s worth considering as simple church leaders are also people who desire to be apart of the Great Commission in the ways that Jesus demonstrated while here on earth! SPECTATORS Who can disciple me? “Not my job” “Not my gift” Discipleship is separate from normal life Can be very involved (actively...

Maybe it’s a bigger deal than we think?

Maybe it’s a bigger deal than we think?

I am generally not someone who leads with the idea that simple church is the “most biblical” way to do church. For me, the idea that the New Testament church seemed to primarily gather in homes is helpful when explaining to folks why it’s normal for the church to primarily ebb and flow through homes, but It’s not my main motivation for advocating simple/house/organic church. For me primarily, simple church is just what makes the most sense given what I know about Jesus, how He has worked in my life, and how I have witnessed His Kingdom operate. However, this morning while beginning the book of Acts, I was watching its overview from the folks at...

6 Benefits To Gathering On Sunday Mornings

Our simple church has settled into meeting on Sunday mornings and I’ve grown to enjoy it.  I have thought of six reasons I would encourage other simple churches to gather on Sunday mornings as well. Certainly there is not hard rule about when folks should meet and most every group will settle on times and locations for a host of reasons. As you think about the best time for your simple church to gather, consider the following… 1.  Convenience – The hardest thing about getting folks together regularly is finding a common time that everyone is available.  In general, it seems that the most available time on folks’ calendars is Sunday morning. ...

Easter Celebration Gathering + Pancakes, Egg Hunt

Easter Pancakes and Eggs! We invite all our simple church friends, family, and acquaintances to join us for a unique Easter Sunday gathering! This Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, 10AM-Noon, we are hosting a network-wide pancake breakfast and egg hunt at Rabbit Run Clubhouse (1920 Fort Harrods Dr.)! We will also enjoy a time of worship through song and testimonies of new life experienced this year. How Can You Help? If all of us pitch in, this can be … simple! Perhaps you can help? Have you experienced new life in Christ this year? Would you be willing to share your story in person or on video?   Can you help make some pancakes?   Would you like to help with...

Connecting – A Simple Favor

Connecting – A Simple Favor

The simple church alliance is a network or “alliance” of simple/house/organic church families in the region. We feel strongly that having connection to other communities is important for us to know Jesus fully and experience Him in our day. I recognize one of the more important roles I can have is to provide connection across simple churches so that relations can form and that we can continue to grow and learn together. Certainly, each person and each simple church has different felt needs regarding connecting with other simple church communities or prioritizing the “network” aspect of simple church. I know many of you receive connection from the body of Christ...

Duerson Family Year End Update! (by Karla Duerson)

Duerson Family Year End Update! (by Karla Duerson)

Dear Family and Friends, This year has been an amazing one for us. In February, our friends called us to see if we’d like to buy the house they had been renting to another family for the previous seven years. It is a house that I’d always admired for its living space and placement on our street. On Valentine’s Day, our friend showed Gavin and me through the home. We took a walk around the block afterwards and decided, with excitement, that we would love to make the house our home. We made our best offer and they accepted! The timing of it all was astounding. We were able to sell our home quickly and began a few updates in the new home before having to move...

#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday #GivingTuesday is an opportunistic social media campaign invented by nonprofits to capitalize on the guilt of Americans who have just spent gazillions of dollars and countless hours purchasing and parusing unneeded stuff for themselves and their family with whom they rarely get to see except on Christmas and Thanksgiving (but now only Christmas, because they spent Thanksgiving at Wal-Mart and on their phones looking for #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday deals.) As such, I did not want to miss out on the opportunity provided by #GivingTuesday to capitalize on the guilt that you may be experiencing from the previous weekend and let you know how you can support...

Christmas Celebration with Lylak December 16

Each year, we host a Christmas celebration gathering for simple church friends and family in the region.    This Christmas, we are partnering with local musicians from the band Lylak and simple church friends Roser (Matthew and Alysa Cobb) to host a night of Christmas carols and songs. Perhaps slightly different from years past, we expect that there will be many folks unfamiliar with the idea of simple church desiring to come via their connection with Lylak.  So, this will be an opportunity for the various simple churches to connect, but also a chance for us to bless the city a message of hope through carols and song.  In addition, we will have opportunities...
