Francis Chan – Rethinking Church (Video)

I’d like to thank my friend Brian Kiser for sharing this short video of Francis Chan “rethinking church.”  Francis Chan left his mega church about the same time we started down the simple church road and . observing his journey from mega church to multiplying house or simple churches has been encouraging!  Due to his prominent voice in the American church, he is also helping others who share his convictions find courage to explore church outside the box. In this video, he gives is a great 10 minute explanation of simple church and what we are trying to encourage here!  In recent posts we have discussed evaluating our churches.  Does your church...

Summer Discouragement? (Updated)

Summer Discouragement? (Updated)

Summer Discouragement? (Updated) By Gavin Duerson I find that no time can test your commitment to simple church like the summer. Summer can expose just how much we like to hold onto the “come” mentality when gathering with believers. Since most in the west are tied to the public school calendar, summer tends to be a time of visiting family and friends as well as vacationing. In a larger traditional church service, this irregularity can go without much notice. However, in simple church, summer travel can leave some sitting at home by themselves for their simple church gatherings and this can prove to be a test of our commitment to organic church principles.  Here...

Evaluating Your Simple Church (Part 2)

Evaluating Your Simple Church (Part 2)

In my last post, I discussed the importance of evaluating your simple church.  Today, I would like to suggest a guideline to help simple or house churches evaluate their communities.  Once again, the attitude and heart behind any evaluation is the most important part.  If not done with humility, love, and a desire to become all that Jesus desires for your community to be, attempts at evaluation can easily slide into a discouraging time where harsh judgment and legalistic remedies prevail.  Nonetheless, just as it would be important for a couple to communicate about ways they can improve their marriage and family, the same is true for the people who are the simple...

Simple Church Tithe?

Simple Church Tithe?

Recently, a blog post by John Piper about tithing the local church caught my attention for two reasons. First, John Piper stated that he would never say “you must give your tithe to my church.” I affirm this in regard to simple church and I appreciate this statement from one of the nation’s leaders in the legacy church.  Indeed, Piper points out in this article that the Bible offers no justification for a mandated 10% tithe to a local congregation. Secondly, his comments about giving to the local church highlight one of the blessings, if not advantages, of giving in a simple church: When we think about what churches need in order to survive and...

8 Ways To Start A Simple Church

8 Ways To Start A Simple Church There are no formulas for how to start a simple church.  The Holy Spirit must be the Initiator and Leader if a real church community is to be birthed.  Even still, I can imagine some ways God could use you to birth simple churches: 1. LTG – As you and a friend or two begin a Life Transformation Group (LTG) and you see that LTG multiply into two LTGs, a simple church can be formed. It’s logical and natural that you say, “why don’t we all share a meal together?” If married, the husband’s and wife’s LTGs can come together weekly for simple church! There are many advantages to this because the multiplication of disciples is...

An Online Simple Church Multiplication Course

An Online Simple Church Multiplication Course

I wanted to share with everyone a very good online simple church course.  “Multiplication Concepts” is led by my new friend Curtis Sergeant. Curtis is involved in simple church multiplication and church planting movements across the globe. Curtis has a tremendous heart for our world and for those who are hopeless and in need of Christ.  It is out of this heart, his lifelong experiences in the harvest fields, and a close examination of the Scriptures that have given birth to the thoughts shared here in these training videos. While you may not follow 100% of everything that Curtis suggests, I know that anyone who is interested in seeing disciples and...

What In The World Are We Doing?

What In The World Are We Doing?

Sometimes in simple church, this question can be heard echoing in the back of our brain. Sometimes the question is an accusation from the enemy (that we are really doing nothing of significance with our lives or that whatever we are doing is wrong). However, sincerely spoken it can be a powerful prayer… “God…what are we doing?… What are You doing and how do You want to involve me?” This Saturday, we will sincerely ask the Lord this question. What are we to be doing? With whom? Why? How? Simple church, while simple in form, is not easy. We believe that there is no better way we could spend a day than to pause and revisit these questions with...

2016 Simple Church Conference / Sept 10-11

2016 Simple Church Conference Prayer for multiplication.  In our fifth year of hosting this conference, we want to have a prayer focus–specifically praying for multiplication of disciples.  One of the characteristics of church planting movements across this globe is “abundant prayer.”  This year we will discuss the essential role of prayer in simple church and disciple making ministry and we will also spend time… you guessed it…  praying!  Together we hope to hear from the Lord in prayer about our relationship with Him and our  role in making disciples of all the nations–beginning with our neighbors.  Certainly we could spend a lot of time...
