“Going To Church” By Dana Vogel

By Dana Vogel We all know it’s important to meet together often as believers for our mutual encouragement. This is true and good. What’s not necessarily true and good, is that many of us equate this with Sunday worship service. My submission to you is this: weekly service attendance is too much and not enough at the same time. What do I mean by that? TOO MUCH: It’s too much simply because there is no command in the Bible to “go to church”. Or to go once a week, or to attend any specific kind of service. In fact, at certain times, a believer may not even have the privilege of any Christian fellowship whatsoever (think of Paul in prison, as an example.)...

Godspeed (Video)

I wanted to take a second and pass along this video entitled “Godspeed” my friend Bart Scarborough turned me onto.  While not directly related to “simple church” per se, for me personally, the idea of living life at a pace similar to Jesus is something I find intriguing, challenging, and very much connected to my journey with simple church.  There is plenty to take away from this for anyone desiring to simplify their life and faith and emulate the way in which Christ went about impacting the world. Godspeed: The Pace of Being Known (subtitles) from The Ranch Studios | Danny Lund on Vimeo. Questions for Discussion:1. In what ways is this...

Virtual Simple Church

Virtual Simple Church

I was really encouraged by a very simple post by Roger Thoman this morning over at the Simple Church Journal.  I’ve mentioned him here before and I would highly recommend that you follow his blog.  The post was about “virtual house church” and I basically thought I’d copy the idea here. With the quarantine in place, many simple churches are meeting online with zoom, skype, facetime, etc.  Since simple church is really all about relationships, this is a fairly natural transition for many communities.  With certain changes to American life and the “church” coming in the months ahead, even post-quarantine, perhaps this will be a trend...

“Finding Church” Book Discussion April 22

“What if the church Jesus is building looks more like wildflowers strewn across an alpine meadow than a walled garden with manicured hedges?”   Finding Church Book Discussion Wednesday, April 22 / 7:30-9:00 PM EST Join us for this special online leadership gathering as we discuss the book “Finding Church” by Wayne Jacobsen.  At a time when many people are having their “church” experience upended, perhaps there is no better time to examine the questions and insights addressed in this book.  What does it look like for us to “find church” in our day? In my opinion, this is one of the more important books about “church” I’ve...

A Church of Two…Now More Than Ever!

A Church of Two…Now More Than Ever!

As folks deal with the quarantine and COVID-19, Christians are discussing how to continue worship services.  What if we consider “church” of a different kind?  What if the Body of Christ recaptured the blessing of a church of two? Jesus said, “Where two or more gather in My name, I am with them,” (Matthew 28:20).  In my experience, understanding and experiencing the reality of church expressed in the relationship with at least one other believer is a basic building block in the Kingdom.  This type of church leads to life-changing discipleship and fulfillment of the Great Commission! A church of two is easy, but it’s often overlooked and...

Canceling Church

Canceling Church

Do we “cancel church?” This is the question many church leaders are wrestling with today. The coronavirus is bringing many aspects of society to a screeching halt. Governments have asked churches to close. Are we “selling out” if we fail to stand up to the government? I would contend that the issue lies with the premise. While it may be possible and even necessary to cancel a church service, the Church cannot be canceled.  Jesus said, “I will build My church and gates of hell will not prevail against it.” I would like to suggest that He is doing just fine with this promise and the Coronavirus will not prevent Jesus from keeping His...
