“New Life” and “Family” Testimonies

The following is an excerpt from our friends in Jessamine Co, Kate and Kaleb, who lead a couple of simple churches there!  God continues to do amazing things through their availability to young men and women in need.  Read their entire newsletter here. // What’s Been Happening? New Life! The best thing I can share with you from the last couple of months is that a young girl named Kailee gave her life to Christ. Here’s the simple version of the story that I’m sure started a big party in heaven. Kailee started coming to our Wednesday simple church a few months ago with a group of her friends. She didn’t seem particularly interested in God, but she loves...

A Word of Encouragement

A Word of Encouragement

“So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time, we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.” – Galatians 6:9-10 MSG Recently, I was treated to one of the more encouraging regular meetings that I have when I met with University of Kentucky Assistant Gymnastics Coach Chuck Dickerson. Chuck is one of the most refreshing human beings I know. (I have shared a bit of his story previously on this blog here). It is no wonder that he was recently named...

Becoming A Church

Becoming A Church

Becoming a Church I often get to have conversations with people about the nature of a local church.  Some wonder, “Is my Bible study or small group a local church?  Why or why not?  Could we become a church?”  Even if not asked explicitly, these questions may tumble around in hearts and minds as we collectively wrestle with what it means to be the Body of Christ. – I have mentioned Zumé Project before and how many Christians find it to be a helpful tool in seeing the formation of disciple-making simple churches.  In the appendix of the Zumé Guidebook, there is an idea presented for a group exercise that I would like to highlight.  Perhaps,...

2017 Year End Letter

Friends, Several years ago I had the picture in my mind of a harbor filled with families working to load up their belongings and family members into a multitude of sailboats. They each were getting in position to leave. They were not coming back. Each boat was filled with their family and friends and they were setting out on an incredible journey–a journey that no doubt would be filled with hardship and adventure, challenges and exploration of the unknown. Boats were loaded and friends and family were in place as they raised the sails. There was a slight breeze that began to blow. However, they knew that a powerful wind was coming and when it did, they would be...

Simple Church Conference – Retreat 2017

Connect with and learn alongside simple/house/organic church practitioners from around the region at this year’s simple church conference/retreat. This year, we welcome Lee and Stacy Wood from Tampa, FL. Lee and Stacy have seen God birth over a hundred house churches throughout the Tampa area in the last several years as Jesus’s followers have been empowered and encouraged to be the Church in their neighborhoods, workplaces and areas of influence. We encourage you to bring the whole family this year and enjoy a time together of refreshment and encouragement around the campfire, on a hike through the Jessamine Gorge, and in times of worship and story-telling...

“Church At The Place” Update

What’s God been teaching us? (By Kaleb and Kate Phillips)   Focusing on the Few God continues to bring broken people into our lives as we make ourselves available to him. There are many needs around us, but our goal is to stay focused on the few people that God draws to us and to work where Jesus is working. If we can raise up a handful of leaders who will break the generational curses in their families, raise their children in the knowledge of Jesus, and multiply their faith, we will have spent our time wisely. The reality of our church and ministry (and personally following Jesus) is that it is more typically a daily grind of obedience and openness to the...

8 Ways To Start A Simple Church

8 Ways To Start A Simple Church There are no formulas for how to start a simple church.  The Holy Spirit must be the Initiator and Leader if a real church community is to be birthed.  Even still, I can imagine some ways God could use you to birth simple churches: 1. LTG – As you and a friend or two begin a Life Transformation Group (LTG) and you see that LTG multiply into two LTGs, a simple church can be formed. It’s logical and natural that you say, “why don’t we all share a meal together?” If married, the husband’s and wife’s LTGs can come together weekly for simple church! There are many advantages to this because the multiplication of disciples is...

Free Christmas Music

With #GivingTuesday upon us, we would like to give a gift to you! Enjoy these songs recorded live at our simple church christmas gathering a couple of years ago! You can listen to and download all the songs for FREE at the link below.  If you enjoy it, please share it as well! This was our first ever attempt at recording a “simple church” worship event live.  I think that this recording came as close as possible to capturing the simplicity of families and friends coming together to celebrate the risen Savior.  This release also includes a song recorded live at a “skate church” gathering and the album version of “Lights on My...

Baptisms and Such

Baptisms and Such

God has been moving! The past six weeks have been some of the fullest, most rewarding, and most draining times of our lives and certainly of our ministry. Since the middle of September we have seen eight young people profess faith in Jesus as Savior and step into the waters of baptism. To put this in perspective, in the previous year we had baptized four people, all of which were amazing stories of redemption. During the past few weeks though, God has really been doing some cool stuff…..early church in the book of Acts type of stuff! Our gatherings have...
