Simple Church Tithe?

Simple Church Tithe?

Recently, a blog post by John Piper about tithing the local church caught my attention for two reasons. First, John Piper stated that he would never say “you must give your tithe to my church.” I affirm this in regard to simple church and I appreciate this statement from one of the nation’s leaders in the legacy church.  Indeed, Piper points out in this article that the Bible offers no justification for a mandated 10% tithe to a local congregation. Secondly, his comments about giving to the local church highlight one of the blessings, if not advantages, of giving in a simple church: When we think about what churches need in order to survive and...

Giving and 1 Corinthians 9

By Jeff Heron  Giving is a great blessing that we can be a part of. As our Master promised long ago, and still affirms in our hearts and experiences to this day, the measure we use in giving out is the same measure that will be used in our receiving in. Giving is just one aspect of living out of sacrificial love, the love we first witnessed in Jesus’ love for us and the love that now empowers us and is the very source of our life. Despite these plain truths, the topic of giving, especially financial giving to a church, is one that has been much debated and discussed. In my own experience, I have been all over the map in what I think and how I act in this capacity....

July 15 Leadership Gathering – from Toby Jenkins

On the third Wednesday of every month we get together for a hands-on leadership training “experience.”  This month, several of the leaders and I will host a discussion on the the financial support for Simple Church Alliance instead.  We will return to the usual training next month, but on July 15 we will pause for this important discussion. What does giving look like in simple church and specifically how are the Duersons supported for their leadership in the region?  What exactly does a gift to Simple Church Alliance support?  What is the current financial picture? We want to have an open and honest discussion on these and other related questions with all...

3 Minutes on Simple Church (Guest Post By Matt Wheeler)

Simple Church Family and Friends, Merry Christmas!  I know you are busy.  Can I take 3 minutes of your time? There are so many things that I want to write about giving to Simple Church, but Simple Church has taught me to trust God’s Word and Spirit working in each person’s heart.  Please take a minute and a half to read I Corinthians 9:6-15: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all...

Thoughts on Giving (Guest Blog)

Thoughts on Giving, by Matt Wheeler I am excited about giving.  Don’t get me wrong, I can be as tight-fisted as anyone and have a long way to go, but this is one area that God has really blessed my family and me.  My wife Kristy and I were blessed to be trained by Gary Montgomery and others on living with a Biblical view of possessions and have participated in and lead a couple of small groups on this topic.  Did you know that there are over 2,300 verses on money and possessions?  The Bible talks about bribes, borrowing, financial planning, and even whether or not you should co-sign for someone.  Jesus spoke extensively about these topics–even more than he...

Guest Blog: Giving In The Simple Church, By David Toth

By David Toth There area number of perspectives from which to discuss the issue of giving in the simple church. Some are the 1) theological, 2) practical, 3) mission, 4) strategic, etc. These brief paragraphs take a practical approach and mention some of the more encouraging aspects of giving in the simple church (an organic house church sized body of believers). In the simple church we can be encouraged that most of our giving can be directed to missionaries, orphans, local apostolics, and needy people. This reflects giving in the early church for the needy in the church and outside the church (orphans, widows, the hungry, etc. (Acts 2:44-45; 11:28-30; 8:1-3; Luke...

Guest Blog: Simple Giving by Matt Wheeler

by Matt Wheeler How does the Bible inform our views on giving? God owns everything and everything that we have comes from him (1 Chron. 29:11-12): “Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.  Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.” We see examples of giving as a personal expression of worship (even before any laws were given to Israel concerning giving).   Abel (Gen. 4) and Abraham (Gen. 14) are two...
