Recommended Readings

I believe strongly that reading the scriptures directly is the most important thing any of us can do when we are seeking to hear from God.  Also, I am very thankful for others who have challenged me, through their writings, to read the scriptures with fresh eyes.  I would highly recommend to anyone interested in simple church to read the following books,  God has used them greatly in my life to better understand what “C/church” is all about. (click on the book’s title to have the option to buy on Amazon.com.  In most cases you be able to read first 30 pages or so without purchase).  Please share any books that have been helpful to you in the...

Mega House Church (Rap)

Most of my life I have enjoyed satire.  Satire will often seek to approve of or accept as normal ideas that the satirist is actually seeking to attack.  Such is the case in this goofy song that applies attractional, hierarchical, personality driven, pulpit centered, church growth, clergy/laity ideas to simple/house/organic church...

Luke 10:2 Virus & More

Hello folks! I wanted to share few thoughts with you all related to the Simple Church Conference. At the conference, many of you were introduced to the idea of the “Luke 10:2 Virus.” I would like to ask you all to join me in spreading this virus! As I think about it, there really is no greater need than for the Lord to send out laborers into His harvest. The harvest truly is plentiful and the workers are few! Here is the story Felicity shared at the Simple Church Conference 2012: Any church planting movement must be preceded and then surrounded by a prayer movement.  Prayer is essential to any move of God.  We need many prayer warriors who will spend hours on their...

Listening To God (Download Free Book!)

If a person states that God speaks to them on a regular basis they are considered a bit kooky in many Christian circles.  With our wider cultural context in mind, imagine the firestorm that would stem from one of our presidential candidates declaring that he frequently hears God speak. Yet, Jesus tells us: My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. – John 10:27 The idea that God communicates in an understandable way to His disciples is not only foundational to the Bible and the Christian faith, but possibly at the core of discipleship–being one of His sheep.  Over the past year, this truth has dramatically shifted my understanding of what it...

Simple Church Cross Cultural Missions?

Simple Church Cross Cultural Missions?

How can simple churches engage in God’s work outside of their oen cultural contexts?  Felicity Dale at simplychurch.com has written about this very subject and in a recent post writes: How are people in simple/organic churches currently actively engaging in cross-cultural missions? People move with their job. Because they already are familiar with simple church principles of mission (find a person of peace and start something around them), it is natural for them to make disciples and start churches in their new location. People go with a traditional denominational entity or other mission sending agency. They are supported financially in full or in part by their...

When to multiply?

When to multiply?

I thought this excerpt from the book The Rabbit and The Elephant by Tony and Felicity Dale was helpful when addressing the question of, “When and how should our simple church multiply?”  I think it also speaks to how someone (I’d recommend a couple of believing families) might possibly start a simple church…   How do we multiply our church? The first church we started grew to more than fifty before we split it down the middle into two groups. For a year after that, people told us that the split felt like a divorce. Because of this, we no longer multiply by dividing a church into two. From the start we encourage those who find a person of...

“Exponential Conference” Live Blog (Day 1)

Well sort of a live blog… I’m going to attempt to post insights I gather from the conference below. I’m not completely sure if this will work so hang with me. 11:24AM – heading out from hotel.  Looking forward to the day and all the the Lord is going to teach us.  Marylin Walker just arrived and we got our entire crew together now!  A couple of websites to take note of on the conference and on Exponential in general: http://www.exponential.org http://www.exponentialconference.org 8:54PM – Well the whole “live blog” thing really didn’t work very well.  Couldn’t figure out how to update blog effectively via...

Upside-Down Leadership (Video)

Yesterday in our network gathering we watched the video below and had a lively discussion about all that is addressed.  If you are involved with us or interested in simple church (or leadership in general), then I would highly recommend that you watch this video.  I’m very grateful to the people at House2House for putting this together as it does an excellent job explaining what leadership in “simple church” is all about.  Indeed, your leadership is truly a gift to the body of Christ!
