Jonathan Wilson, FCA, and Skate Church

I am pleased to introduce a good friend.  Jonathan Wilson, a local Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative, also serves as a leader in simple church. This short video, put together by Providence Church in Raleigh, NC (a church that supports Jonathan’s work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes), highlights his work in the skate community here in Lexington. He also briefly discusses what simple church at the skate park looks like. You can find out more about the skate camp mentioned in this video here.  The simple church that gathers at the skate park (also known as “skate church”) has a facebook page...

Mega Church planting House Churches?

Northland Church in Florida recently caught my attention.  Northland is a mega church seeking to be a “church distributed.”  Their vision for distributing the church, according to their website, is to plant simple churches.  The even have a directly-linked page dedicated to simple church planting that is similar to this site.  Also, you will see a link to a special training site that includes 11 video teachings and notes to help people start simple churches. Here is a video on their churches main website that features the first lesson in their simple church training:   Without question, the Church in America changing as more and more people wrestle...

No Traffic Controls?

I came across this video the other day and I thought it was a great teaching tool for simple church. What do you think? What could this video possibly have to say to us about simple church?… I’d love for you to take a stab at it and post your comments below.  Perhaps we can create a group-like teachable moment right here on this page.  If you get stuck, click on the video to view comments posted on YouTube. See if any of them sound familiar!

Explain Simple Church In 2 Minutes On A Napkin

In our “Introduction” section we have included a few of our favorite videos that explain what simple church is, how it functions, and why we feel it’s important to encourage in the region.  I recently added the video below to the list.  Perhaps it can help you to better understand what simple church is all about and serve as a tool for you when sharing the idea with friends and family?

The Flipped Church – Insights From the Khan Academy

The Flipped Church – (insights from the Khan Academy) I have recently become intrigued with  Khan Academy. For those who may not be familiar, the Khan Academy began when Salman Khan started long distance tutoring his niece in math by creating short YouTube videos on various math subjects. Fast forward several years and the Khan Academy has grown to include numerous subjects and is being used across the globe by everyone from adults wanting to brush up on their skills to children within the context of their public school classes. If you listen to Khan talk about education or perhaps read his book The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined, then you will hear about...

Why Start Simple Churches? (Video Part 3)

This is part three of Erik’s video series on simple church.  Here he addresses the question, “Why start Simple Churches?”  I appreciate the simplicity in which Erik explains “church” as a natural result of disciples making disciples–which God desire to do through every follower of his.  It is simple and natural to see groups of disciples coming together to follow Jesus in community with each other.

What Do We Do At A Simple Church Gathering (Video Part 2)

In this video Erik addresses the question of how a simple church can be formed and what the church does at a simple church gathering.   He has some very practical ideas and as you can see it is simple.  I love his last point about praying that God would show you pockets of people who are “culturally averse to the American way of doing church” and being available to see a seed church formed.

Simple Church Video Series with Erik Fish (part 1)

I had a great visit with Erik a while back in Cleveland and he is a great partner in promoting simple/organic expressions of church multiplication.  He has recently posted a series of short teachings on simple church and discipleship.  I will repost them here in the coming days.   In this video, I think the term “seed form of church” is helpful to think about when making disciples and seeing simple churches formed.  Sometimes I think we can fall into the trap of thinking that we have to have fully mature simple church functioning on day one for it to count as real local church.  Enjoy the first video!

Child Driven Education – A Lesson for The Church?

I recently posted about Sergio Juárez Correa, a teacher in Mexico, and his “radical new teaching method” that is having an amazing impact on his students.  After discussing this post with some of my friends, I was encouraged to go online and listen to some of the TED talks by Sugata Mitra, the gentleman who inspired Sergio to adopt his new methods of teaching.   I have posted one of Sugata’s TED talks below. I believe that what Sugata is onto has great implications for the western church.  As you view this short teaching, ask yourself the following questions: * Has God truly wired us all to learn in this way?  Are there similarities to how He has chosen...

Creative Simple Church Planting Training Recap

Each month we invite folks to come together to join in a discussion about issues relevant to simple church leadership.  This month, Uday Balasundaram facilated our time together.  Over the last several months, Uday and I realized that we share a similar passion for missional living, discipleship, and simple church–even though we use different words to describe it.  Uday did a wonderful job of challenging us all to think about how we, as believers, are called to “mix” with the world around us and to join God in the creative process of birthing new life in the culture in which we find ourselves. Here are some of my “take-a-ways” from our...
