Godspeed (Video)

I wanted to take a second and pass along this video entitled “Godspeed” my friend Bart Scarborough turned me onto.  While not directly related to “simple church” per se, for me personally, the idea of living life at a pace similar to Jesus is something I find intriguing, challenging, and very much connected to my journey with simple church.  There is plenty to take away from this for anyone desiring to simplify their life and faith and emulate the way in which Christ went about impacting the world. Godspeed: The Pace of Being Known (subtitles) from The Ranch Studios | Danny Lund on Vimeo. Questions for Discussion:1. In what ways is this...

To Live Is Christ, To Die Is Gain (Francis Chan)

Hello friends. My suspicion is that if you are reading this blog then you could be apart of a home fellowship of some type. Furthermore, if that is the case, it may have been a while since you listened to a “sermon” together with this group of folks. I would like to encourage you to consider watching this message by Francis Chan at your next gathering. Of course, you could just watch it right now, but I think there would be great value to watching it together with your friends and discussing. If you have followed this blog, then you have seen links to Francis’s writings and transition from megachurch pastor to house church planter. Now he...

Maybe it’s a bigger deal than we think?

Maybe it’s a bigger deal than we think?

I am generally not someone who leads with the idea that simple church is the “most biblical” way to do church. For me, the idea that the New Testament church seemed to primarily gather in homes is helpful when explaining to folks why it’s normal for the church to primarily ebb and flow through homes, but It’s not my main motivation for advocating simple/house/organic church. For me primarily, simple church is just what makes the most sense given what I know about Jesus, how He has worked in my life, and how I have witnessed His Kingdom operate. However, this morning while beginning the book of Acts, I was watching its overview from the folks at...

Transitions (Audio Teaching)

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Wayne Jacobsen here in Lexington.  He probably doesn’t remember much about the meeting, but I remember being slightly discouraged.  At the time, I was just getting started with this ministry of helping folks start simple churches and I didn’t get the sense from him that he was all that excited about simple churches!  I had read his book So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore?” (download free here) and really resonated with the main character’s frustrations.  While I agreed that “house church was not the answer” (a realization the character discovers), I’m not...

Why I No Longer Go To Church – An Open Letter (by Jeff Herron)

Below is an “open letter” that Jeff Herron posted to facebook and I’m reposting here with his permission.  I thought Jeff articulated well what I find many simple/house church folks are trying to express–especially to loved ones and other brothers and sisters who may not understand why they are doing what they are doing.  Jeff has posted on this site before and he and his family continue to be an encouragement to me and to many involved in simple churches across the region.   ————— An Open Letter By Jeff Herron To:  My friends and family who regularly attend traditional church services Re: Why I no longer...

Podcast Turns 4! – New Episode Available!

It’s hard to believe it, but the Keep it Simple Podcast is celebrating it’s 4th Birthday!  What started out as a reason for Tom and I to regularly connect and discuss issues relevant to house/simple/organic church as turned into a four-year, 100+ episode endeavor!  Along the way, we have been blessed to let many of you in on our thoughts about house church in real time and even encourage others living outside our state to pursue Christ through the simple church.  Tom and I have even managed to not kill each other!  In all seriousness, I’m grateful to Tom and his idea to start this podcast and how it has allowed us to grow as friends and to...

Is God Counting?

Is God Counting?

What if God is not counting our sins against us? This seems like a silly question, because if you are reading this, there is a good chance you are a Christian, and you would know to say to me, “Of course He is not counting our sins against us!”  However, if an adulterer was sitting in front of you, would you say, “Good news!  God does not count your sins against you!”  Perhaps you may not be so sure that He is not counting in such a situation?  He is only not counting the sins of those who have first showed some sign of sadness for their sins, right?  Only then does God stop counting, right? I have certainly thought I believed that He is not...

Two Churches at The Same Time

Two Churches at The Same Time

One of the take-a-ways from my time with Lee Wood at our simple church conference was the simple concept of “two churches at the same time.” One of the biggest challenges for simple churches is grasping how we can be a committed and intimate community of believers that also grows into multiple simple churches.  Growing together and outward can seem at odds.  Often, our minds are bent toward the “splitting” (grow the group and then split it in half when it gets too big).  Others envision sending folks out of the group to start new groups as opportunities arise.  Because we perceive that both of these options neccesitate saying goodbye to those...

Evaluating Your Simple Church (Part 2)

Evaluating Your Simple Church (Part 2)

In my last post, I discussed the importance of evaluating your simple church.  Today, I would like to suggest a guideline to help simple or house churches evaluate their communities.  Once again, the attitude and heart behind any evaluation is the most important part.  If not done with humility, love, and a desire to become all that Jesus desires for your community to be, attempts at evaluation can easily slide into a discouraging time where harsh judgment and legalistic remedies prevail.  Nonetheless, just as it would be important for a couple to communicate about ways they can improve their marriage and family, the same is true for the people who are the simple...
