Canceling Church

Canceling Church

Do we “cancel church?” This is the question many church leaders are wrestling with today. The coronavirus is bringing many aspects of society to a screeching halt. Governments have asked churches to close. Are we “selling out” if we fail to stand up to the government? I would contend that the issue lies with the premise. While it may be possible and even necessary to cancel a church service, the Church cannot be canceled.  Jesus said, “I will build My church and gates of hell will not prevail against it.” I would like to suggest that He is doing just fine with this promise and the Coronavirus will not prevent Jesus from keeping His...

KY Governor Encourages Home Church to Combat Coronavirus?

The gates of Hell cannot prevail against the Church, but it would seem that the Coronavirus may be able to stop many “church services” in the coming weeks. Solution? The Kentucky governor suggests home church this weekend… I never thought I’d see the government encouraging house church but there it is. ” We have a lot of opportunities for virtual services.  I know those out there that would otherwise go (to church) have the opportunity to get out that Bible or whatever it is of their faith that gives them guidance and ensure that they have that time with their family this weekend in their own home where they can practice their faith and...

Zach Winters with Sylvie, Dana Vogel – POSTPONED

UPDATE:  THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED.  STAY TUNED AND WE WILL UPDATE FOLKS ABOUT A NEW DATE.  MEANWHILE, ENJOY ZACH’S MUSIC WHILE QUARANTINED! Earlier this year, I was excited to see that Zach Winters released a new album. I first heard of Zach Winters when I noticed a tweet from one of my favorite songwriters, Josh Garrels, giving a shout out to Zach Winters and the album Monarch.   I checked it out and immediately became a Zach Winters fan, as did Karla.  When his newest album, Love is a Garden, came out, I immediately purchased it and knew right from the first track, “Give Thanks,” that this album was a gift to me personally. Living in the...

To Live Is Christ, To Die Is Gain (Francis Chan)

Hello friends. My suspicion is that if you are reading this blog then you could be apart of a home fellowship of some type. Furthermore, if that is the case, it may have been a while since you listened to a “sermon” together with this group of folks. I would like to encourage you to consider watching this message by Francis Chan at your next gathering. Of course, you could just watch it right now, but I think there would be great value to watching it together with your friends and discussing. If you have followed this blog, then you have seen links to Francis’s writings and transition from megachurch pastor to house church planter. Now he...

That is true for all of us. But many things are certain. Jesus is still King. His love is immense. His plans and purposes will prevail! As I have considered 2020 and how best to focus my energies with the Simple Church...

#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GuiltGivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday (originally posted Nov. 26, 2018)  #GivingTuesday is an opportunistic social media campaign invented by nonprofits to capitalize on the guilt of Americans who have just spent gazillions of dollars and countless hours purchasing and parusing unneeded stuff for themselves and their family with whom they rarely get to see except on Christmas and Thanksgiving (but now only Christmas, because they spent Thanksgiving at Wal-Mart and on their phones looking for #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday deals.) As such, I did not want to miss out on the opportunity provided by #GivingTuesday to capitalize on the guilt that you may be experiencing from the previous weekend...
