Update From Pendleton County

A Quick Update From Pendleton County

By Jeff Heron

I’ve been wanting to see a Christ-centered recovery program started in our county for a while now. Drugs are a huge plague in our area, along with all the family and relational fall-out that comes along with it. I learned of one being offered by a local church last fall, but that group was more interested in eating meals together than anything else. It sputtered and died.

Just a few weeks ago, I decided to visit a recovery group I used to attend up north of us. It was the first time I had attended there in many months. That same night, a group of folks from Falmouth, the Pendleton county seat, were “coincidentally” in attendance as well. They were visiting groups in the area to get input on starting their own group. Amazing!

We have been meeting together now for just a few weeks. Our core group of five has already added a couple new members, and the men of the group have begun to meet another day of the week for a Bible study time.

I’ve done a lot to try to “make things happen” the last couple of years, with very little to show for it. This has been a refining and winnowing away process for me, as I have learned that my best efforts are pointless and worthless without God’s Spirit moving. I have shifted my focus from success (that’s Jesus’ job, anyway) to *significance* (doing what Jesus says to do and following him where he leads). I have also learned discipline — i.e., being ready to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. Believe me when I say that I was primed and ready to engage with this new group of folks when opportunity struck!

God is moving and at work in Pendleton county, not least of all in my own heart. He is so very good. Blessings on all of you!
